A Guide to Murano Glass: Clear, Milky White, Smoke, Amber & Frosted

The colour and finish of Murano glass can transform more than the look of a chandelier — it also changes how the light feels in a room. Clear glass can appear light and sparkling, Milky White creates a softer, more diffused glow, Smoke adds depth, while Amber and Honey bring warmth.

There is no single right choice. The best finish depends on the atmosphere you want to create, the amount of natural light in the room and the materials and colours already present in the interior.

Clear Murano Glass — light, reflective and timeless

Clear Murano glass allows the construction and individual glass elements to remain visible. It catches daylight, reflections and light from the bulbs, often giving even a substantial chandelier a visually lighter presence.

Clear is particularly effective when you want a larger statement light without making the room feel heavy. It also works beautifully alongside stone, timber, colour and patterned textiles because the glass adds texture without competing with the surrounding materials.

Milky White — soft, sculptural and calm

Milky White, opaline and alabaster-like glass filters the light and softens the overall expression. Instead of sharp reflections, the chandelier takes on a more unified, almost sculptural volume.

It is especially suited to bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms where you want a comfortable, atmospheric glow. Milky White also works beautifully in minimalist interiors where the silhouette of the light itself becomes the focus.

Smoke — depth without heaviness

Smoke glass creates more contrast and depth than clear glass while retaining transparency. In daylight it can feel architectural and graphic; in the evening it becomes softer as the glass catches the warm light from within.

Smoke works particularly well in tonal interiors and alongside dark timber, chrome, brushed metal, stone and neutral textiles. Because tinted glass absorbs more light than clear glass, choosing the right bulb output is especially important.

Amber & Honey — warm and atmospheric

Amber, Honey and cognac tones enhance a sense of warmth. They pair beautifully with walnut, travertine, brass, warm natural stone and earthy textiles.

They are a strong choice when you want the chandelier to introduce colour even when it is switched off. In the evening, the glass develops a warm depth that can make a dining area or seating space feel more intimate.

Frosted Glass — a softer, more contemporary glow

Frosted or satin-finished glass diffuses the light and reduces strong reflections. The result is a calmer glow and a more understated expression than fully clear glass.

It works particularly well when you want the form of the chandelier to remain prominent without the bulb or every reflection becoming the focus — for example above a dining table, in a bedroom or in a pared-back interior.

How glass colour changes the light

Glass colour is only one part of how a Murano light performs. The number of glass elements, their thickness and texture, the lumen output and Kelvin of the bulbs, and whether the fixture is dimmable all have a significant impact.

  • Clear: the most transparent and reflective; often perceived as the brightest option.
  • Milky White: softens and diffuses the light.
  • Smoke: adds depth and creates a softer, darker expression.
  • Amber/Honey: enhances warmer tones and an intimate atmosphere.
  • Frosted: produces an even, diffused glow with fewer sharp reflections.

Which Murano glass works best in each room?

Dining room: Clear adds sparkle and reflection, while Milky White, Frosted or Amber creates a softer, more intimate effect above the table.

Living room: this is often the perfect place for the chandelier to become a sculptural statement. Smoke and Honey add depth, while Clear helps larger designs feel visually lighter.

Bedroom: Milky White and Frosted are natural choices when you want a calmer glow with fewer strong reflections.

Hallway and staircase: consider how the fixture will be seen from several angles. Clear and Smoke are particularly effective at revealing the structure and shape of the glass.

Wall lighting: on a smaller scale, glass colour remains highly visible even in daylight. Explore our Murano wall sconces to compare different finishes.

Consider the materials around it

One of the easiest ways to choose a glass finish is to look at the materials already in the room. Clear glass can create contrast against timber and textiles. Smoke works naturally with darker or more graphic materials. Amber and Honey pick up warm notes in timber and stone, while Milky White can bring calm to an interior with more colour or pattern.

You do not need to match everything exactly. Often the most interesting result comes from introducing a new tone or texture rather than repeating what is already there.

Handcrafted Murano glass — variation is part of its character

Murano glass is handcrafted, so subtle variations in colour, texture, small bubbles, thickness and shape can occur between individual glass elements. These variations are a natural part of the craft and make each light slightly unique.

Colour can also appear different depending on daylight, the surrounding surfaces and the bulb you choose.

Frequently asked questions about Murano glass

Which glass colour gives the most light?

Clear glass absorbs the least light and is therefore usually perceived as the brightest option. The actual light level, however, depends mainly on bulb lumen output, the number of light sources and the construction of the fixture.

Will a Smoke chandelier make the room too dark?

Not necessarily. Smoke glass creates a deeper appearance, but the correct LED bulbs and a dimmer allow you to control the light level. If the chandelier is the room's main source of general lighting, bulb output should be considered particularly carefully.

Is Milky White Murano glass completely opaque?

It varies between glass types. Milky White is generally less transparent than clear glass and diffuses light more softly, but the degree of opacity can vary according to the composition and thickness of the glass.

Which Murano glass works best in a modern interior?

Clear, Smoke and Milky White all work beautifully in contemporary spaces. The more important considerations are the contrast with surrounding materials, the form of the chandelier and the atmosphere you want to create.

Can the colour vary between handcrafted glass elements?

Yes. Small variations in colour and texture are normal in handcrafted glass and are part of its character.
