The history of Murano

The history of the glass masters of Murano dates back to the Middle Ages, when Venice was one of the world's greatest trading cities. At that time, glass was a valuable and sought-after material, but because the high temperatures required to melt glass were a fire hazard for the city's wooden houses, the craft was moved to Murano - an island just outside Venice.

During the 15th century, Murano glassmakers became renowned for their skill and creativity, and their glasswork was soon sought after across Europe. They developed techniques that could produce everything from simple glasses and window panes to stunning crystal chandeliers and art glass that would adorn the finest palaces.

But it wasn't just their skill that made Murano glassmakers famous. They also had a unique ability to keep their techniques secret and limit the number of masters who could make the most valuable products. This way, they were able to keep their prices high and make Murano glass art an even more sought-after and exclusive product.

During the 18th century, Murano glass art reached its peak, but in the 19th century, competition from cheaper glassware from other countries began to affect Murano glassmakers. In the 20th century, Murano glassmakers were revitalized by a growing interest in handmade products and art glass, and they continued to produce beautiful and unique products that are used all over the world.

Today they are particularly sought after for their unique glass lamps that come in all different sizes and colors. One of their unique techniques is called "lamp weaving", which allows them to create beautiful patterns and shapes in glass. This technique requires great skill and decades of training to master and their lamps are sought after by artists and collectors all over the world. We at The Italian Edition have chosen to focus specifically on all the varieties of the beautiful lamps that are made in and around Murano. And although the techniques have been developed since the Middle Ages, they continue to keep their secrets close, making each product a unique and exclusive creation.
